Ad of the Day (6.5.12)

An advertisement is anything that sells something to a potential consumer base. Whether it is a type of cereal, a gym membership, or a car – it is all about trying to get someone to buy into what you are selling them. But an advertisement doesn’t have to always have to result in the exchange of money. You can sell an idea, a service, or – in the case of today’s Ad of the Day – a business.

McGarrah Jessee is an advertising agency in Austin that does the advertising for Shiner, Whataburger and Frost Bank among others. They used to be located in a cool warehouse-type building on the edge of downtown, but in 2010 they moved into the heart of Austin.

The former American National Bank building was once a staple in Austin, but has sat vacant since 2006. After it was named one of the most endangered buildings in Texas, McGarrah Jessee decided to take a look at the building and see if they could restore it to it’s former glory. They completely remodeled and renovated everything, and the result is a striking building that is both modern and classic at the same time. Take a look at the video that plays on their website.

Their new building communicates a lot about who they are and what they can do for their clients. With such strong Texas brands (like Shiner, Whataburger and Frost Bank), I would imagine that it would mean a lot to them that McGarrah Jessee saved a building so steeped in Texas history from destruction. It also shows that they are committed to making bold statements in the midst of the mundane hustle and bustle of life. Your eyes can’t help but be drawn to the dramatic building as you pass by – and that’s exactly the point. Trust McGarrah Jessee – they will make you stand out among the crowd.

Check out some images of their building on their Flickr page – did you notice all of the Shiner? Must be nice to have them as a client.

What do you think of McGarrah Jessee’s new digs? Do you think it accurately conveys the message that they wanted to tell? Sound off in the comments below!

  1. I found this particular “Ad of the Day” to be rather interresting. People always think of advertising as print or media, but by selling themselves in this positve/respect-demanding light is confirming what their clients and potential clients should want for themsleves.

It reminded me of Don Draper’s speech to Ed Baxter on last Sunday’s episode, where he more or less says for him not to settle, to strive for more, better, and dominate. Show the world that you are a powerhouse and you know what you are doing and what you can do.
